AirBnB is an iconic travel accommodation reservation app. This project aims to dissect the app and find user needs that may not be adequately met.

Problem

Although AirBnB is at the top of the game when it comes to accommodation reservation, through research it was found that they need to pay attention to certain areas of the user’s experience.

Concept

At first I wanted to get a better grasp of AirBnB. I did an app analysis of their current flow when making a reservation and when making a wish list.

I also created alternative possible flows that users may take as well as a SWOT-analysis. This helped me grasp AirBnB as a whole.

I then moved on to usability testing, firstly I conducted pre-test interviews with my chosen candidates, and then the test commenced.

The test informed a lot of data and served a major insight into the mind of the user which prompted me to create user personas as well as a user journey based off the user personas.

When doing usability testing on specific functionalities of AirBnB’s wish list experience, it was found that there are some features that are missing that may aid the user in navigating wish lists.

One of the issues that were found was that users could only use a wish list for one date. This means that if they wanted to book more than one date they had to make an entirely new wish list.

Testing also showed that users didn’t have an intuitive way to add/remove items from a wish list.

This was solved by taking inspiration from other apps such as Spotify, to add/remove a song on a playlist.

Reflection

This project pushed me to my fullest capabilities, I wanted to be faithful to AirBnB’s design elements, and I created them from scratch following their guidelines. I had an amazing experience executing this project and having the opportunity to present to the team at MakeReign as a Finalist. Thank you!
